About Me -- Meri OBARA

Kia ora, my name is Meri and I’m from Tokyo.

I’m currently staying in Green Island with the Young family, which includes three girls and a doggy.

After graduating from high school in March, I came to Dunedin in April. —so, I’ve been here for two months. I’ve been impressed by the beautiful nature and the kindness of kiwis so far.

When I was in high school, my favorite subject was geography. I actually researched about New Zealand’s Seafoods in my geography class, even though I hadn’t decided to study in New Zealand yet. At that time I never predicted that I would be studying here one day.

I chose this course because I want to gain the academic English skills for studying at the University of Otago. I’m interested in agriculture because it is the foundation of our lives —we need food, don’t we? I’m excited to major in Agricultural Innovation. In the future, I would like to have a sustainable farm.

I’m passionate about learning new things from people, places and experiences. That’s why I enjoy visiting museums, and meeting professionals. On the other hand, I sometimes find it difficult to spend time with people constantly. —I really need time alone to recharge. In my free time, I love watching Kabuki, cooking and baking, thinking about social issues and sustainability, spending time in nature and hanging out with my lovely dog. These hobbies help me relax after socializing.

My strengths are:

  • A strong sense of curiosity
  • Determination and perseverance
  • The ability to observe and support those around me

My weaknesses are:

  • Lack of quick decision-making
  • A tendency to procrastinate and hesitate
