The Ideal School: My Vision -- Milae

Even though I have already graduated from elementary school through university, I sometimes feel that I can’t do anything by myself in my life. I can’t fix broken machines at my home and can’t understand most of the words at the bank. I didn’t learn these kinds of life skills, I only learned academic knowledge from school. I think that’s a big problem. Life skills are the most important thing for living well. Therefore, a school teaching life skills is my ideal school, and I want to name that school “Life School.”

In the Life school, there would be many special teachers - an engineer, a computer programmer, a builder, a taxi driver, a chef, a bank clerk, and so on. They are all professional workers in their workplaces. The students can learn many skills from them and see how those skills are used in real life. Besides, each student can choose some skills which they are more interested in, at higher education levels such as polytechnic and university. Through this process, they can be more independent and prepare for their future jobs.

This kind of school could cause some practical problems. First, some people might complain that all students should learn the academic subjects, such as math, history, or science. However, in the Life School, all students would learn those subjects as well but only the basic things. I think all students need academic knowledge but only at a basic level, because most advanced academic knowledge is rarely used in many jobs.

The most important thing in our life is having life skills. We should know how to live independently. Having a job is also one of these life skills. Through the Life School, all students can learn many skills for becoming independent adults.

  1. I agree. I'm always confused in such a situation. I'm university student now but I still don't learn such a word at the bank at all.

  2. An interesting proposal, Milae! Designing education that will prepare children for work & life has been a perennial challenge for educators. Coincidentally, just this week, the NZ Minister of Education has proposed an overhaul of secondary school education in this country which will have a focus on better preparing students for the workplace, readying them for being carpenters, mechanics, plumbers, travel agents and so on. 3. I strongly agree with your opinion! I realized that I never really learned important life skills like those at school before.

  4. I agree with you! I did not learn these life skills in schools, so I had to learn my self. It takes long time and It is so stressful. I hope I can go to "Life School" in next life.

  6. I really enjoyed reading your essay. (I liked the name of the school, too, lol.) From my experience, I believe it is important to meet wonderful adults who are passionate about specific things. So, I think your ideal school is one that helps students find what they love and build their future.
