Boyan Slat & the Ocean Cleanup -- Meri Obara
Firstly, I would like to write about my opinions of Slat and his project. I think that Boyan Slat and his project, “The Ocean Cleanup,” is essential for life on our planet. This is because almost all people address the prevention of ocean pollution to save money and avoid complications. Moreover, the reason why I became concerned about environmental issues was the microplastics problem. Thanks to him and his wonderful project, we are still able to eat seafood, and see and enjoy amazing wildlife. So, I would like to be grateful to him.
Secondly, I’ll focus on his personal characteristics which have fueled the project. I suppose that Boyan Slat’s three personalities and strengths—taking action, patience, and a pure mind—might contribute to his project. When he was 16 years old, he came up with one simple question, which was “Why didn’t people clean up plastic?” and he started his project. Surprisingly, it has still continued for about 15 years. His pure mind made him start his journey, his taking-action skill led him to seek to solve ocean pollution by his own hands, and his patience with the huge and obscure problem led him to continue this project for ages.
Lastly, I assume that this project might continue by introducing new systems or changing to more efficient systems. This is because, as we watched in some videos during the class, plastic production is expected to increase significantly and the project might be in high demand. However, I think the current system might not be enough to cover such situations, so they might need to change the operation. Additionally, ironically, continuing this project would indicate that many plastics still exist. I hope that this project won’t need to continue anymore.
Thoughtful & passionate post, Meri. Slat certainly has a range of characteristics, otherwise he would never have achieved what he has. The combination of vision / big picture thinking & attention to detail / practicalities he has is formidable. Lots of us, might stop at the thought "Why don't we clean up the ocean?" & religiously place the plastic containers & bags we use in the appropriate recycle bins. Slat has gone so much further. David :-)
