Pandemics of the Past -- Hanako
Through the videos, I learnt a lot of things about a history of pandemic. Especially, I was amazed that one of the causes of the first outbreak of Spanish flu was people refrained from reporting it in the US because it might violate the 'Sedition Act of 1918'. At that time the public opinion prioritised war rather than stop infection. In addition, People caught the cholera from drinking water is horrible factor of cholera epidemic. water is definitely essential for people, but if they drink water, they might get cholera. It terrified me.
Although I felt sad that many people were killed by these bacteria or viruses, I could learnt some lessons. For example, we must keep sanitised to prevent germs, or keep going for researching in biochemical to take action as fast as possible when pandemic is happened.
COVID-19 affect on us in not only negative way, but also positive way. For instance, the technology of online class, lecture or conference has been developed rapidly since COVID-19. It enable people who cannot attend class or workplace due to living place as well as people who want work in online.
The worst thing is I guess Spanish flu and World war 1 occured simultaneously.
ReplyDeleteI agree that chemical research needs more development, especially since we’re facing so many new outbreaks nowadays.
ReplyDeleteI was surprised as well that the origin of the Spanish flu was not Spain and the reason of that was political issue!
ReplyDeleteThat's true that we were saddened with the news about the pandemic day after day. However, in a silver lining, we still have chances to protect ourselves and do for our societies.
ReplyDeleteHello, Hanako, I definitely agree with you that during Cholera pandemic, when the bacteria spread through sources of drinking water, it was absolutely terrified because water is one of the 5 basic factor of living.
ReplyDeleteI agree with your point. The COVID-19 pandemic has led many countries to develop better medical and public health systems, and people are now better equipped to protect themselves.
ReplyDeleteI also found the 'Sedition Act of 1918' very disturbing. I felt like most people were scared and unsure of the situation due to the lack of public health communication. I'm glad that we have better public health communication now.
